The Next Generation of Design
Students Reimagine the Future of Design for the Collab Student
What does the next generation imagine for the future of design? Every year, university-level design students respond to a unique challenge that affects daily life with the best designs showcased by Collab and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The inspiration for the 27th annual Collab Student Design Competition was the work of celebrated designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec who received the 2021 Collab Design Excellence Award. Inspired by the Bouroullec’s work, the prompt for last year’s challenge was to design a piece of furniture or an installation with artistic expression through the repetition of a single element.
This year’s Collab Student Design Competition is inspired by the work of DRIFT – an Amsterdam-based multidisciplinary studio that bridges the categories of art, design, and technology. The prompt is to create an object for the physical world, which incorporates two or more of the following characteristics:
· Science fiction
· Nature
· Technology
· Transformation
· Movement
· Sustainability
After the competition, the best designs will be displayed online through the Collab/Philadelphia Museum of Art website and various social media platforms.
Congratulations to all the talented emerging designers who submitted their work to this years and last year’s competition, and thank you to our panel of nationally recognized, industry-leading judges.
