The Petal Procession

The Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Juneteenth celebration in 2023 included a breathtaking underfoot bouquet designed by Collab Board member Lindsay Bedford. “The Petal Procession” featured flat vinyl rose petals strewn across the Art Museum steps in a temporary art installation.

“I conceived of the Procession as a way to pay homage to romantic love and love for public art in Philadelphia,” said Bedford. “Petals on the famed ‘Rocky Steps’ were designed to welcome the community up into the Museum for the Juneteenth family activities.”

The Petal Procession was installed at the steps of the Museum from June 16th to 19th, 2023. It evolved from Bedford’s 2022 version of the project on the 1300 block of Percy Street in South Philadelphia, a semi-hidden oasis just south of Pat’s Steaks that is the site of many murals and public art projects.

Both Processions were funded by Mural Arts Philadelphia and made possible by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
